About Asbestos Registers
Asbestos Registers are legal documents that show the location, type, condition, and recommendations for asbestos on the premises. By law, any premises used for commercial purposes must develop and have an Asbestos Register readily available.
The Asbestos Register is a live document. It must always have the current info on the presence and condition of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). It helps you actively manage any asbestos, or presumed asbestos, in your buildings. The register is your record of known and presumed ACMs.
A manager, building owner, or Person Conducting Business or Undertaking (PCBU) must ensure that you have an asbestos register on-site. If someone constructed the building before 31 Dec 1989, this is necessary.
This register must be available to staff, contractors, or others within the facility or site.
The report should provide details on the location of any asbestos and include the existing management plan or hierarchy of control. You must review the register at least every five years or if:
-
We identify additional asbestos or ACM in the workplace.
-
We conduct remediation of some types of asbestos.
-
Management reviews the plan for asbestos in the workplace.
The register needs to identify items when possible. For example, it should note the type of asbestos and whether it is friable or non-friable. It should also note who the “competent” person who completed the register was, etc.
